A Chinese ivory chess set carved in the Burmese pattern in natural and red colours. The king and Queen are as crowns on stems with knops and carved foliage; the Bishops with miter; the knights as horse's head and the Rooks as castles with flags.This is a good set with the king measuring 3 3/4inches (9cm). age: 19 C. condition; good, I notice that the knop of one of the red knights is slightly fatter than that of its corresponding piece.We can obtain CITES EXPORT Licence (2/3 weeks).
A Chinese ivory brise fan, carved on both sides in Canton with overall scenes of figures and flora. The sticks measure 9" (23cm) long which is larger than usual.Age: C. 1870. condition : very good, only a couple of struts on the background brise work are missing and three of the sticks have slight unevenness. Like most ans of this age, due to frequent opening and closing, the silk ribbon has been replaced some time in the past. We can obtain CITES Export Licence, if necessary(2/3 weeks).
DESCRIPTION: A Chinese ivory card case, each side carved with two cartouches depicting people in various garden settings. The lid removes to reveal the interior which would hold the calling cards. Dating from the last half of the 19th C., c. 1860 to 1900, the case has a nice mellow patina; there is a linear crack to the lid on one side, shown in photo. DIMENSIONS: 4” high (10 cm) x 2 ¼” wide (5.7 cm).
From our Chinese Monochrome Collection, a large carved ivory elephant bridge, late 19th century, depicting a procession of eight individual elephants of graduating size, nicely carved from a single tusk. The elephants are well-rendered and the ivory has a good buttery patina somewhat better than the photos reflect.

A Cantonese ivory box with three shaped cartouches on the lid and further ones on the sides, all depicting typical Chinese figures outdoors. This is a good clean box with excellent quality ivory tusk and in undamaged state. Age: C. 1891. size: 9 1/2 inches (24.5cm) long x 3 3/4 inches (9.5cm). Large ivory carving of a Chinese Empress head wearing an elaborate filigree crown. The Empress is finely carved with delicate facial features, eyes, earrings on the side, detailed hair & draped material. Inside the crown on top of the head is a separate carving of a small ivory seated “Future Buddha” with a flaming maitreya holding a whisk in one hand. DESCRIPTION: A Chinese carved ivory toggle in the form of Chan Chu, the magical three-legged money toad, with his hind leg curled like a tadpole, and circular “warts” lining his back. A toggle such as this would not only have been used as a counterweight for objects hanging from a man’s sash, but also acted as a good luck charm to bring wealth into his life. A Chinese ivory plaque carved very deeply( almost three layers), with the typical Cantonese scenes of figures in pavilions and gardens. It is an unusual and desirable item partly because of the depth of the carving which graduates from 10mm on the upper part of to 15mm on the lower section; the gilding of the back and the thickness of the tusk used ( 25mm at its thickest).
