This pottery head was made some 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It has been made in a two-part mould, luted together at the sides. After firing it was "cold painted" in white, black and red pigments. In the top left and right are purpose-made holes where originally would have been placed metal hair decorations.
