This attractive pottery jar was made some 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220). It is particularly well-made and coated in a green glaze that has degraded and flaked in places due to its long burial in damp conditions. Exceptionally rare Buddhist molded clay tablet from the Tang or possibly earlier. The sensuous curves of the attendant Bodhisattvas flanking the Buddha shows the obvious Indian influence on early Chinese Buddhist art, the Buddha holds his hand in the Dharma chakra mudra (teaching gesture) indicates there may have been a Tibetan influence as well.
