Eccentric early Chinese gray pottery jar with exaggerated wide flared mouthrim. The Han Dynasty dating is a conservative attribution as these strange shaped vessels are usually much earlier, such as Zhou or Shang but without a published example it is safe to say at least Han. Highly fired and potted on a wheel makes a Neolithic dating doubtful. This item is in excellent condition with a couple of very minor chips on the edge of the foot only. D: 16cm/6.2in and H: 9.7cm/3.9in.

A charming small tiger figural of Czihou pottery - iron brown painted design on a cream colored glaze body - the base unglazed. We believe this piece dates from the Song Dynasty and was made at Cizhou in Shandong Province. We are aware of late Qing copies of these Czihou pieces that were made in Shanxi (Xian area). However, the patina of this figure and the easy flow of the design gives us a reasonable belief in the Song Dynasty dating, circa 1195-1279. There is a hole in the back of the tiger -...
