Hand crafted as part of a roof ornament, this is a dramatic ceramic figure depicting a Dragon Carp with golden yellow glazing. It was used to ward off evil spirits from buildings. This piece would originally have adorned the rooftop of a Qing Dynasty dwelling.It was considered good luck to place a figure such as this on top of ones house, where it could be viewed from a considerable distance. DESCRIPTION: A Chinese molded gourd cricket cage with ivory rim and cap. The fitted cap is inset with a circular carved and pierced plaque of lotus and blossoms against delicate grillwork. Dating from the early Republic Period, C. 1920 and in good condition with one age fissure on one side of the gourd and one tiny piece of grillwork missing. On the base can be seen a very old sticker. DIMENSIONS: 4 1/2” high (11.5 cm); cap is 2 3/4” in diameter (7 cm).
This is a mid Ming dynasty 15th/16th century blue and white Mei Ping vase. It is loosely decorated with an under glaze blue design of chrysanthemum flower scroll motifs on two sides of the vase. It is possible that this was a provincial piece. These are surrounded with stylized cloud designs. On the upper shoulder there is a continuous band of cloud lappets design. DESCRIPTION: A pair of Qing Dynasty ox bone calligraphy brushes with etched robed figures and tiny Chinese inscriptions on their handles. The bristles are attached to dark horn ferrules and the handles terminate with round beads threaded with silk cords through the brush tips. DIMENSIONS: Each 10 ¾” long (27.4 cm).
The top of this small rectangular paktong (“baitong”) ink box is nicely engraved with a lotus flower blossom and its large leaf, with a small butterfly hovering overhead. 19th century, Qing period. The fitted inkstone inside the cover is original, and there is considerable ink residue in the lower half. The bottom of the box has a copper interior and base.
