In the Imperial Court the peacock plume was awarded only to Chinese nobles and officials of the sixth rank and above. A CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL PLATE, QIANLONG, 18TH CENTURY.

The centre of the plate features a fine armorial crest, unknown to me, perhaps for a Dutch family. Closer inspection of the armorial shows fine cross-hatching in imitation of European engraving on the lion, on the crown and sun and even on the blue enamel. Little has been written about armorial devices found on porcelain specifically ordered by the traders from the Netherlands in 18th century China...

A CHINESE BRONZE VASE, MING DYNASTY, 16TH ~ 17TH CENTURY.

The cylindrical vase has four immortals in relief, riding on the waves, each in front of a large leaf-form aperture. Above the immortals is a wide band of diaper work. Two chilong dragon handles and three stubby feet complete the vase. The vase has no base plate, indeed it has never had one, and this may relate to its purpose. I have seen vases of this form described as holders for incense sticks or as holders for divination sticks...

A CHINESE GREEN DRAGON DISH, JIAQING MARK, 1796 ~ 1820.

Two five-clawed dragons above waves chase gilded pearls of wisdom.

The dragons have each scale drawn separately rather than the ‘cross hatched’ style used in later periods. They have their fangs and claws picked out in white enamel. The gilding is soft and matt unlike the bright metallic gold used later.
