Silk Road Gallery
$600.00
This early 19th century Chinese makeup box with huanghauli top and original mirror is in excellent condition. A key design finely carved along the front apron is the only decorative element added to the functional form of the piece. The spare design and use of fine hardwood make this vanity more typical of the earlier Ming period than Qing, when folding vanity boxes became more flamboyant with lots of carving, often incorporating painted flowers and dragons...

Glazed a soft grey/green, this rustic pottery Chinese oil lamp has charm and appeal that outlive its humble origin. It provided a simple light source. We have not seen one of these in use and originally thought the oil and wick were put into the shallow bowl on top. A visitor to this web site tells us that was not the case. The oil and wick, he said, were put into a small saucer that was set on top of the shallow bowl...

A 19th century Chinese box used for utilitarian food storage is so nicely made that it qualifies as a handsome accent piece for shelf, desk or bureau. The box originated in Zhejiang Province, one of China's wealthiest provinces (the capital city is Hangzhou), and has a simple design when compared with utilitarian items from the more rural provinces. The barrel-like construction technique, though, is similar to that used throughout the provinces...

This Chinese ancestor painting mounted on a hanging scroll groups together a civil official, his wife and his mother. Although ancestor portraits usually show only a man and wife together or on separate paintings made to be displayed side by side, we have seen a few that include two women and a man. Our catalogue listing #08-60, a very large ancestor painting on hemp, shows a similar group of three...

Description: A bronze censer with stylized loops was in hefty weight and molded with very fine quality. In a fantastic darkish-red patina(which was very much favored by Chinese connoisseurs who used to describe the color as Red of Ripe Dates), The stooped censer stands by its bulge tripod feet in an elegant way...

This is an original old Chinese poster of two women (actually men disguised as women) advertising cigarettes. Very early poster women were not allowed to pose for these posters. Condition: Some fraying around the edges and minor rips from age.

A late 19th century Chinese Yixing pottery teapot is paired with a teapot holder made of tightly woven reed with metal fittings. The metal hasp fits around an opening for the teapot spout so that tea can be poured while the pot remains in the basket in order to stay hot. The hasp closes with a hook in the shape of a fish, traditional Chinese symbol of abundance, and two metal hinges at the back of the lid are shaped to resemble Chinese coins...

Intricacy of detailing on this early 20th century Chinese handwoven bamboo basket make it a collector's piece. It is beautifully balanced and constructed, a feat of bamboo engineering. Along both sides of the bent bamboo handle are Chinese characters, now too worn and faded to decipher, that perhaps identified the maker and place of origin. The piece is in very good condition. The base appears to have been touched up in recent years with clear lacquer...

Chinese Qing dynasty (19th century) Daoist priest’s robe densely embroidered in a pattern of complex iconographical symbols set against a pale celadon silk background created entirely from satin-stitch embroidery. The style is the traditional rectangular front-opening form which rests on the shoulders and has the lower part of the sides sewn together to form armholes. The center back is embroidered with a flame-bordered circular cartouche containing a pagoda flanked by flying birds...

Chinese late Qing dynasty (late 19th century) woman's rank badge embroidered with a central satin-stitched silver pheasant with very nicely detailed feathers. A single bat hovers below the sun at the upper right. This Mandarin square would have been worn by the wife of a 5th rank civil official. The badge is backed with stiff paper covered with blue silk and is bordered on the front in red silk. This rank badge measures 8 3/8"V x 9 1/8"H...

A lidded wood box for storing teacups is carved on the handle with two figures flanked by dragons. The double-sided carving on this 19th century Chinese piece is relatively primitive, an indication that it originated in the countryside or a remote province. This type of cup storage container was used in many regions of China. The front half of the lid is removable so small cups without handles can be stacked inside. A metal hasp keeps the lid in place when the box is carried...

Made of beautifully grained willow wood, this early 20th century Chinese water carrier is just the right size and shape to hold magazines or newspapers. The tall handle is centered with a well done carving of a tree branch and two pomegranates, a traditional symbol of fertility in old China. The oval-shaped body of the vessel is made of curved willow wood staves fitted tightly together and held with two brass bands...
