Antique Japanese Bronze sculpture extremely well modeled and superbly executed with stunning details depicting a young Japanese philosopher Kinjiro Ninomiya Sontoku carrying a bundle of firewood on his back and an axe through the back of his belt. The interior of the base is entirely inscribed in Japanese characters.

CONDITION: Very good quality workmanship with excellent natural dark patina, the right hand, carved of bone, is possibly a later replacement.

Distressed Japanese Iki mask with crystal eyes. Gofun finish over dry lacquer composition. Details including veins, wrinkles and furrows. The surface is in a distressed state with significant losses and some 'alligatored' texture possibly from exposure to elements. A very rare yab-yum bronze from the end of the 19th. century ( Qing Dynasty 1644 - 1912 ), acquired for the van Norten collection in the early 30's of the last century in Sichuan showing the male deity in sexual union with his female consort. Yab-yum means Tibetan literally 'father - mother'.
