Chinese Neolithic Qijia Culture Cord-Impressed Pottery Jar

This jar was made some 4,000 years ago by peoples of the Neolithic Qijia Culture (c. 2050 - 1700 BC), from what is now eastern Gansu province. They produced a variety of pottery vessels including cord-impressed pottery of many shapes and sizes. This particular example is made from a coarse gritty clay and has a wide flaring mouth. An early Arita porcelain bowl made for export to the Far East. The decoration is based on a Ming Chinese dragon & phoenix bowl, the interior with a fish rising from waves. Fuyoyama or Tengudani kilns. See Impey, ‘The Early Porcelain Kilns of Japan, Arita in the First Half of the Seventeenth Century. Clarendon Press, Oxford.1996’ where several sherds are illustrated. The shallow dish with a roundel containing a very finely painted coiled dragon, Danryū mon, within a double circle. The cavetto is decorated with a stenciled trellis or Chinese lie-wen design against a pale ruri background. Within the foot-rim is found an apocryphal Chinese Ming Chenghua reign mark.

See Shibata vol II #612, for another example, dated to 1690-1710.

From our collection of unique Japanese Tea Bowls we present you another rare piece of art: a Japanese Wan-Nari Chawan with Urushi lacquer, shaped in wabi-sabi tradition in the 19th century (late Edo Period 1603-1868). Wan Nari (椀形) Chawan are quite rare and a fine addition to any collection of Japanese Chawan. It is the only one we were able to acquire in the 20th century.

A jewel-like miniature ‘Imperial’ Satsuma vase, of baluster form with elephant head handles. One side is decorated with flowering lotus, the other with a gourd vine. The base has the signature Hogetsu beneath a blue Shimizu mon.

The twelve sided dish with brown-dressed rim is decorated in enamels that appear to be an attempt to reproduce doucai wares. The decoration features a bee, a monkey, a bird and a deer in a landscape.This forms a rebus on the auspicious line ‘feng hou jue li’, “enfeoffment and emolument”.
