A very unusual modern Japanese pottery vase. Exaggerated chatter decoration spiraling from the foot to the shoulder, the tacky clay lifted to a very coarse texture before firing. The neck to rim, also spiraling up the vase, finished smoothly. Apparently in the tradition of the stoneware tile work kilns of Bizen and Tokoname. Studio artist marks in impressed cartouches on the foot. Excellent condition. Height, 8 inches.

A wide low chawan tea bowl inscribed with a poem by Otagaki Rengetsu reading “Yo no naka ha tata utatane no shibaraku wo samenu yume ji ni matofu wari nasa. In the world only for the span of a nap yet wandering an inescapable path of dreams…such a mystery. (Translation from Rengetsu.org). It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) diameter, 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and in fine condition.

A strong form has been carved from this block of rough shigaraki clay, a seven sided vessel absent of glaze yet filled with the vibrant colors and textures of the kiln. It is an early work by Shigaraki star Kohyama Yasuhisa amd comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It measures 7 inches (18 cm) tall, 4-1/2 inches (11.5 cm) across and is in fine condition.

Colour and glaze are equally rare and wonderful. We offer this fantastic chawan together with its Edo period wooden storage box and its cloth pouch called 'Shifuku'.

This Hagi Gohon Chawan has a split cross footring called 'warekodai'. Tea bowls of this style were favored by busho chajin (warrior tea men)...

Japanese Arita porcelain round form deep dish decorated in underglaze blue with a karashishi (Buddhist lion dog) among leafy flowers set against a faintly celadon tinted white ground. The back bears an abbreviated apocryphal Chinese Ming dynasty Chenghua reign mark (Taimin nenka) on the glazed base. The foot rim is unglazed. A mid Edo period carved woodn mask for Shishi-mai festival dance covered in red and black lacquer with gilded teath and eyes in rarely seen good condition. The mask is used with the hand, not worn over the head, the dancer usually hidden beneath a long flowing cape. It is 22 x 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 x 9 inches) excluding the horn and ears. There is an old metal plate nailed over one hinged jaw inside (not visible from outside), where the wood had likely once given way...
