A kozuka with sea shell and seaweed decoration with gold and silver overlaid on shakudo (a pickled gold and copper alloy) nanako ('fish roe' textured ground.) The utility knife handle with filed gilt bronze sides and back. Slight bend and the nanako somewhat dented in places. Would present nicely enough with a sword fitted to hold a kozuka in the saya (scabbard.) Kogatana (utility blade) not included. Length, 3 3/4 inches.

Cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, fine, unrefined Mino clay. Shape and style (note the trimmed walls) make it appear contemporary with the late Oribe bowls.

The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical white, feldspatic Shino glaze has been poured under which a decoration of a willow tree (yanagi) and a fence have been applied in iron oxide (oni ita). Just the foot ring and its immediate surrounding was left unglazed...

Antique Japanese takeda ningyo doll of general Yoshitsume Minamoto of the Minamoto clan (born 1159, died 1189). He is considered to be one of the most famous samurai in all of Japanese history. He fought alongside his brothers Yoritomo and Noriyori in the Genpei War against the Taira clan, but would later be defeated at the Battle of Koromo in 1189. This bowl is designed with a granular white painting called 'Shiro (white)-Chibu, which is very rare in Kutani. (Ao (blue)-Chibu was made more often. Please take a look on an Ao-Chibu Tea Bowl - our item # 0188)

Beside the Shiro-Chibu there is a golden arabesque design, which is called Kin-Karakusa.

Framed painting of a warrior with a drawn sword, holding a severed head in his hand. On his back a flag with the image of a skull. Perhaps one of the heroes of the Taiheiki, such as Endo Giemon Masatada. But between Kuniyoshi and other Utagawa artists, several series of heroes were produced. Unsigned. The style of Utagawa Kuniyoshi or Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Black ink and colors on paper, mounted as a scroll, cut and framed. Japan, Edo period, 19th century.
