Very beautiful Kuro Oribe Chawan of early Edo period:

Only very little distorted half cylinder shaped (hanzutsu) tea bowl made of light, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body is covered with the typical, glossy black iron oxide glaze inside and outside, leaving an unglazed 'window' on one side. The 'window' is decorated with chidori (plovers) flying over an irrigation wheelin iron oxide glaze which has then been covered with a clear ash and feldspar glaze...

This is a child kimono of the Tohoku district of Edo period. This is Tsutsugaki where a face is very sharp. And it is very impressive with lining dyed in Akane. Generally, the dyeing madder-red was said to have been cut off early in the Edo era, but the dyeing madder-red was slightly handed down in the Hanawa area of the Akita area. And this lining was left. This is Kagura-screen used in Kanto area for the Meiji period(1895). As for this, cotton spun by hand is used. A heavy porcelain jardinere or plant holder very finely painted with flowering peony and other shrubs in shades of underglaze blue and standing on three Chinese Ming Dynasty style Lion head feet. This item was made in Japan during either the late 19th or early 20th Century. Condition: excellent - no damages and no restoration. 21cm (8.25 inches) high; 31cm (12.25 inches) diameter.

A fine small ivory okimono of Jurojin holding a peach with a deer at his side. The figurine measures 2.25" (5.7 cm) high. Signed on bottom, it is in excellent condition. Price $650 USD.
The ivory stand does not go with the okimono, but we like them displayed together. Stand measures 1.75" (4.4 cm) and has some age cracks, but it is solid. Stand price $125 USD.

An ancient technique known as “haito” in Japanese was used to give this piece its distinctive look. Thought to have originated in neolithic times and commonly used during the T’ang and Song dynasties in China, an excess of fuel is added at the very end of firing which causes a thick layer of grey ash to adhere to the outside of the vessel...

A bakumatsu era (mid 19th century) Shishi Koro of dark red clay covered in a rich green glaze from the Banko kilns in Mie. It is 14 x 24 x 8 cm (9 x 5-1/2 x 3 inches) and is in fine condition but for one clawed toe which has been chipped. This squat style of facial expression was popular from the declining years of the Edo period into the early Meiji, and fits the date of this piece perfectly.

Original woodblock of a samurai by Japanese master and teacher Toyokuni Utagawa, 1769-1825. Signed in lower left, the print is float mounted. In very good antique condition, there is some worm hole damage along the right edge. Measures sight size 13.5 inches high, 9.25 inches high.

Japanese antique two section large choba tansu (merchant's chest) from the Kansai area, made with hinoki (Japanese cypress wood) with a beautiful natural finish. The top section has sliding panels made with keyaki burl (elm) and 4 drawers. The bottom section has 3 large drawers and another set of sliding panels with horizontal slats. The lower right hand side has a small drawer below which is a safe box with two interior drawers. The hardware is iron with warabite shaped handles...

An impressive mokubi painting in ink and gold on silk depicting the Zen Buddhist patriarch Bodhidharma/Daruma in profile. Signed and sealed: Imai Tenroku (b. 1866), a specialist in the painting of Buddhist subjects. The present painting is dated Taisho 8 (1919). Fully inscribed box and paper w. artist’s data. L 185, W 52 cm. Picture frame: L 112 cm, W 40.5 cm. Condition: Very fine (at the bottom a small portion of the silk has loosened from the mounting).

This striking chawan is a fine example of Oni Shino (carbon trap and natural ash glazing) that Tsukigata is so well-known for. Coining the term in the mid-50’s after countless failed experiments—which ultimately culminated in the discovery of this unique style of pottery—“Oni” translates roughly to demon or ogre...
