Japanese Meiji period cast iron tetsubin in lotus form with a Chinese inscription dating 1702 on one petal. The inscription reads “Kangxi forty-second year, 9th month, 6th day, auspicious day made.” Lotus form lid. Measures about 8 1/4” in length by 4 3/4” high (8” including handle). 19th century. Very good overall condition. The handle can stand upright, but it does not balance easily. There is rust to the interior. From a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.

Stoneware water jar or mizusashi as used in the tea ceremony with round bottom developing into a diamond shaped edge. Greyish smooth stoneware, decorated with horizontal grooves, covered with brown iridescent glaze on the outside and with a mottled greenish-yellow glaze on the inside, dripping over the outside edge and down. Black lacquered, diamond-shaped coved. Takatori style, Japan, early Showa era, circa 1930-1950s.

This is Tsutsugaki produced in the Shonai district for the Meiji period. This was used in a merchant's family. As for this, cotton is spun by hand. This has a pattern and the family coat of arms of the peony butterfly. This is a pattern of the good luck. This has slight aging fading in three places, but there is not the damage. Very large pear-shaped chaire. Very dark brown stoneware, thin walls, with thin glaze of oily colors and fiery brown-red running down. Ofuke ware, Owari Province (Nagoya), Japan, late 18th century.

H 4 ½ inches

Fine condition, old handwritten label, identifying the piece as Ofuke, dating it to 1780s.

A traditional shape called Kinuta (fulling block) draped with ochre glaze over charred blacks by Tsukigata Nahiko wrapped in a brocade bag and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oni Shino Kinuta Hana-Ike which is in turn enclosed in a black lacquered wooden double-wood storage box. A Kinuta (fulling block) is a small wooden mallet used to beat silk into a soft texture. It is a very traditional shape in Japanese pottery.
