White Cat Date: 1929 Signed by the artist in the image in English and Japanese. Matte size: 23.25 x 19.375 inches. Matte window: 17.5 x 12.75 inches. Medium: Japanese woodblock print with gauffrage embossing on the cat (seen in indirect light). Condition: Woodblock print is sealed inside matte and is possibly adhered to board. Some creasing visible in side lighting. Oban diptych by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) titled “The Story of the Strong Woman Takashima Oiko of Omi Province” from the series "A New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures." The print depicts Takashima Oiko leading Saeki Urinaga home in an effort to strengthen him for a wrestling match. The artist's signature and Taiso seal are at the lower left. The lower left margin contains the date of "Meiji 22" (1889). The title cartouche is at the upper right. Published by Tsunashima Kamekichi...

Deep purple hues border a silvery road which visually leads to the bare branches of a tree in winter. The focus then turns to a somewhat distant church in the background which is this prints main theme. Name used from 1842-1856. He retired in 1859. Print by Kuniyoshi Utagawa and dated 1852 (year of the Rat) or 1853 (year of the Ox). Framed print.
