Pair of matched naturally stressed wooden plaques with “couplet”, encouraging harmony and peace. Traditionally Chinese write to right to left so the meaning of the board on the right encourages one to “admit your mistakes to avoid trouble in the world” while the one on the left, encourages one to “be tolerant, to live in peace”. It has been suggested to me that these may be have been hung in an old Kung Fu studio as this would express the spirit of martial arts...

Black and white print of Nagasena Ahrat. In the 9th century this portrait of the luohan was painted as well as those of 15 other Ahrats by the painter Guanxiu who was a Buddhist monk. 900 years later, in 1757, Emperor Kienlong during a visit to Shengyin Monastery in the former province of Hang admired the 16 portraits. In order to perpetuate them, he ordered the carving of 16 sculpted stones to produce numerous prints of these works of art, of which here is one of the rare examples...

One fan painting features beauties at a temple surrounded by clouds holding celestial maidens and a deer. A monkey is paying homage to a female who is seated on a lotus throne. Traditional scroll painting of what I am assuming is the Chinese ideal of a courtesan putting her make up on in morning. This was painted in the year of the Fire Rat- 1936 or 1996. I would tend put this at the earlier date because the paper shows some age and this has been newly remounted, as well as the style is evoking feeling of a French boudoir. Ma Quan was a female artist active in 17th and 18th centuries famous for her birds and flower paintings. This is a homage to her made in the 20th century, hand painted ink on paper traditionally mounted on a silk paper scroll. H: 126cm/50in and W: 63cm/24in- mounted dimensions H: 200cm/78in and W: 78cm/30in.

Painting on woven paper. An unusual and surprising technique. The paper is cut out then this woven paper is painted. However there is a subtlety because in some places only the vertical strips are painted and not the horizontal ones which shows us colored squares alternating with unpainted squares which gives a blurred effect anticipating our "pixels" and which, I think, gave the illusion of a woven fabric...

The painting depicts a small traditional building barely visible on an outcropping surrounded by rocky cliffs and forested mountains.
