A small but very attractive album leaf in ink and faint colors on silk depicting a scholar on an outing on a river or lake. Signed: Yue An zhu ren (Moon Hermitage Dweller). Dated gengshen = 1860. The style used is in imitation of the ‘dry or sparse ink landscape’ associated with the Yuan painter Ni Zan (1301–1374). Qing, mid-19th cent. H 23 cm, W 18.5 cm (picture frame). Condition: Fair w. some soiling.

In the 9th century this portrait was painted, along with those of 15 other Ahrats, by the painter Guanxiu who was a Buddhist monk. 900 years later, in 1757, Emperor Kienlong during a visit to Shengyin Monastery in the former Hangzhou Province discovered the 16 portraits there...

The artist has represented a standing character, leaning on a broom, with a blissful and amused expression on his face turned towards the sky. This is probably Shih Te, a mischievous young Chinese monk who, according to legend, lived in the Kwo-Ching-Su temple in China during the Tang period around the 9th century. He is always represented with a broom because he was employed in the maintenance of the temple...

Beautiful traditional Chinese brush painting of the Buddha mounted on a beige silk scroll, excellent condition. He is sitting on a lotus throne with his right hand raised in the Shuni mudra symbolizing patience and discipline. There is an apocryphal dating of 1845 Buddha’s Birthday, Daoguang reign and signature of Reqin. Mounted size is L: 203cm/80in and W: 78cm/31in- actual painting size is L:131cm/51in and W: 66cm/26in. Circa last quarter of 20th century.

All around is a lush growth of various types of plants and trees. A painting with seal of Zhang Daqian (1899–1983) inspired by a landscape painting by Kun Can (1612–1674). Age early 20th century.

Traditional brush and ink Chinese painting of birds done in the style of Jin Cheng 金城. This homage was done in the 20th century and is very attractively mounted a silk scroll. Jin Cheng travelled internationally and was a founding member of the influential Chinese Painting Research Society (Zhongguo huaxue yanjiuhui) that became later known as the Hu Society (Hu she). The writing at the top right is an apocryphal dedication- gifted to Yu Po 1907...
